"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

Family of CMMs
Most readers will come to this book with knowledge of the Capability Maturity
Model also known as the CMM for Software. So in order to describe concepts
within the CMMI, we will often compare the approaches taken in the CMMI to a
similar topic in the CMM for Software. In some cases, we may describe the concept
within the CMMI as it relates to other models, such as the Systems Engineering
CMM (SE-CMM) or Systems Engineering Capability Model Electronic Industries
Association (EIA) 731. But for the most part we will stay within what some call the
family of CMMs. Some readers would of course want us to consider other models
and evaluation approaches in our discussions including, to name a few, the Software
Development Capability Evaluation (SDCE), International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) 9000 series, Six Sigma, and ISO 2000; however, that is not
what this book is about.
terminology
This book uses the language that has become a part of the process improvement
community. This community has grown up around the family of CMMs.
