What is Process impro ement?
Have you ever tried to tell your mother exactly what you do for a living? Have you
ever sat next to someone on an airplane and tried to explain what your job is? Have
you ever gotten into a long discussion with the immigration police after an international
flight and tried to describe what your business is and why you had to leave
the country to do it? Well, this section of the book is for you.
When we tell someone that we do process improvement for a living, everyone
thinks they know what that is. If they decide to be ???helpful,??? they will start sending
us articles via e-mail that they have picked up from the Internet. It rapidly becomes
clear that these people have no idea what process improvement is. That is not their

fault. There are different types of process improvement approaches out there. So,
this section of the book tries to discuss what some of them are.
We believe that most approaches to improving processes can be summarized by
the following categories (the terminology used is mostly ours):
