We
worked backward from the output (the paycheck) to the processing (the programs)
to the input (the tax change).
The last approach for improving processes to discuss is called model-based process
improvement. This is the type of approach that the CMMI uses. There are many
models available for process improvement ??”ISO and Malcolm Baldridge to name
just two. The difference between the previous types of improvement approaches
and model-based improvement is on which processes are selected for improvement.
BPR selects high-level business processes (like corporate governance or time to
market). Benchmarking selects any process that is causing problems (like distribution
and delivery of its product). Process Engineering/Workflow Management
selects smaller subprocesses of work tasks. The CMMI (and ISO and Malcolm Baldridge)
select predetermined focus areas that have been shown historically to cause
the most problems in specific types of businesses. The CMMI focuses on software
engineering, systems engineering, hardware engineering, and integrated teams that
must produce a product.
