Generic goals and generic practices support
institutionalization and increasing sophistication of the process. Specific goals and
specific practices support implementation of the process area. Process maturity and
capability evolve. Process improvement and increased capability are built in stages
because some processes are ineffective when others are not stable.
Table 3.2 shows the process areas contained in each maturity level in the staged
representation and the corresponding Process Areas Category in the continuous
representation.

Typical Work Products??”Each process area gives examples of typical documents,
deliverables, or other outputs produced within the process area.
Subpractices??”Lower-level practices that provide more information about
the practice. For example, the practice may be to write a project plan. The
