"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

54 n Interpreting the CMMI
our Mandate
We are tired of discussing which representation is better than the other. They are
really both the same. What is different is the approach taken to structure and
implement improvements. The staged approach follows a defined path of selected
process areas. The continuous approach allows the selection of an individual process
area or process areas.
In the staged approach, beginning with Maturity Level 2, there are seven process
areas. You would probably not tackle all seven areas simultaneously. You might
select Requirements Management and Project Planning. You would implement all
of the specific practices for those two areas and the generic practices at Level 2. You
would then continue with the remaining five process areas defined for Maturity
Level 2. After implementing all generic practices and specific practices for all of the
process areas listed in Maturity Level 2, you would be considered Maturity Level 2.
Using the continuous approach, you might feel that your organization really
needs the most help with Project Planning.
