"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

So you implement the specific practices
of that area, and then continue with the generic practices. Guess what? You are
now at Capability Level 2. If you continue with all of the process areas listed in
the staged approach (the remaining six), implementing the process areas, and the
specific and generic practices for those process areas, you have now switched to the
staged approach. However, maybe you feel that you would like to continue focusing
on Project Planning. You could now institute the generic practices for Level 3. If
you did that, you would be at Capability Level 3 for Project Planning. Maybe you
decide you like doing process improvement because the organization has seen the
benefits of it. So you continue focusing on Project Planning, but also decide to try
implementing Requirements Management. You institute just the specific practices
for Requirements Management while also instituting the Level 3 generic practices
for Project Planning. If you accomplish both areas successfully, you are now at
Capability Level 1 for Requirements Management and Capability Level 3 for Project
Planning.
