"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

The generic practice that most closely matches this PA is GP 2.6 Manage Con-
figurations. The term configuration control is used instead of the previous term
from CMMI version 1.1, configuration management, when describing appropriate
levels of configuration activities. We believe this change in wording is to emphasize
version control as well as formal baseline configuration management.
Configuration Management includes defining configuration items; developing
or implementing support tools, techniques, procedures, and storage media; generating
and maintaining baselines; tracking change requests and controlling changes;
documenting the results of the configuration management effort; and performing
configuration audits.
Summary
Although at first glance it appears that Level 2 of the CMMI has not changed
significantly from Level 2 of the CMM for Software, reality must set in. While the
words in the CMMI and the layout of the process areas appear to be very similar,
they are not. Remember, the CMMI includes Systems Engineering, Software Engineering,
Integrated Product and Process Teams, and some supplier interactions.
