"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

96 n Interpreting the CMMI
OPF introduces who should be doing process improvement and what process
improvement is. The Engineering Process Group (EPG) is mentioned here??”one
of the few groups still retained in the model. The EPG is the group responsible for
planning process improvement and implementing the plans. Members may or may
not be involved in any initial appraisals comparing their organization to what is
included in the CMMI. The process area essentially describes how to initiate, diagnose,
evaluate, act, and learn from process improvement in an organization. Those
of you familiar with the IDEAL model will recognize the use of this acronym for
the layout of the process area.
One recommendation we have in this area concerns the formation of the EPG.
Some organizations have decided to form a separate EPG for each discipline??”that
is, one EPG for Systems Engineering, one for Software Engineering, and one for
IPPD. Those organizations have quickly found that this separation of duties based
on job defeats the purpose of the EPG.
