"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

Understanding Maturity Level 3: Defined n 99
Tailoring is also discussed here. The organization must document its criteria for
when tailoring of the organization??™s processes can be done by a project and what
those tailoring guidelines and rules are. However, if you find that you are tailoring
often, and tailoring more information from the OSSP, can you really state that
you have a standard organizational process? We don??™t think so. Doesn??™t sound very
standard to us.
Things that most organizations tend to forget about this process area:
How to document processes that can be used. Individuals create processes
that are either too complex to properly implement or too high-level to properly
implement. You will need to rewrite, replan, and repilot your processes
and procedures.
There are differences between the types of documentation you will need to
produce (see our chapters on process documentation??”Chapters 13, 14, and
15).
IPPD is optional. If you are just starting out in process improvement and
don??™t currently use formally integrated teams (as defined by the CMMI), we
suggest that you not try to institute this concept.
