In Project Planning and Project Monitoring and Control, risks
104 n Interpreting the CMMI
are identified and strategies for handling the risks are introduced. Evaluating project
risks and the impacts of probable risks are addressed. The Risk Management
process area is much more proactive, involving identification of risk parameters,
formal strategies for handling risks, preparing risk mitigation plans, and structured
risk assessments. Technical Solution discussed risk in terms of risks involved in
selecting alternative solutions and reducing risks in make??“buy??“reuse decisions. The
Decision Analysis and Resolution process area discusses evaluation processes used
to reduce risks made in making decisions and analyzing alternatives. Although
preparing for risks can be considered an organizational-level task, mitigating risks
is usually the responsibility of the project.
Periodic and event-driven reviews should occur on the project to summarize
the most critical risks that may occur. Make sure you review risks during periodic
reviews.
