"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

CMMI allows for
tailoring of the process and for aligning the process to the needs of the
Is CMMI Right for Small Organizations? n 151
organization. However, this alignment requires more thought than was
previously required with the CMM, as the CMM was directed specifi-
cally at software engineering. As stated previously, the SEI responded
to the cries from the marketplace for more information regarding those
areas where the CMM was lacking??”specifically systems engineering.
The organization can also choose how much of the model it wishes to
follow. For example, if an organization is not interested in applying Systems
Engineering guidelines cited in the model, that organization may
select the continuous representation of the model or only the Software
Engineering aspects. Rather than add more information to the CMMI
version 1.2, the type of information contained in this model is also being
distributed among the three CMMI constellations, that is, the CMMI
for Development, the CMMI for Acquisition, and the CMMI for Services.
