Using the measurements is also key. It does
no good to simply collect the numbers and report them??”the numbers
must be used. At the lower levels and in less mature organizations, the
metrics were not always used. Most organizations only began focusing on
metrics when they were attempting to reach Level 4. And not all organizations
continued in process improvement once they achieved Level 3.
They dropped out before really turning their attention to measurement.
By separating out this process area, emphasis is placed on collecting, analyzing,
reporting, and using the measurements. Once again, the organization
can tailor its process improvement efforts, and the usage of this
process area, as related to business goals. The authors of this book were
also surprised at how easily most organizations new to CMMI were able
to implement this process area and how much the organizations seemed
to appreciate the guidance given.
Issue: CMMI is too vaguely written to be used in appraisals.
Point: Organizations attempting to use the model for an appraisal report
greatly extended timeframes.
