Another way to write procedures is to assign
them to one individual, and have him go back to his desk and write them. While
this may get you off the hook, and while it looks like something is being done, this
method generally does not work. It is too much work for one individual. Even if
you have several individuals writing procedures, they still will need help reconciling
how they perform a function versus how the rest of the organization does it versus
what the CMMI is recommending.
Summary
When writing any of the documentation discussed, remember to focus your efforts
on:
What is practical
What is practicable
What is tied to the CMMI
What is tied to SCAMPI results
Make sure the people writing the procedures understand that they will also
have to follow them. One of our client organizations calls this ???Eat your own dog
food.??? It??™s easy to write bad procedures if you think they will not pertain to you.
