"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

Chapter 22
on PIIDs (Practice Implementation Indicator Descriptions) should also be read, as
it discusses required appraisal documentation. These chapters are complicated and
should not be read by the faint of heart.
We usually recommend using the formal, full-blown SCAMPI Class A appraisal,
as the SCAMPI A provides more information with less risk of inaccuracy then the
smaller, ???quick-look??? Class B and Class C appraisals. Class B and C appraisals offer
a greatly condensed and accelerated set of activities than SCAMPI Class A. The
time it takes to conduct a SCAMPI A depends on the scope of the SCAMPI Class
A appraisal, that is, the number of process areas to be reviewed, number of projects
to be reviewed, the organization??™s exposure to previous appraisals, the organization??™s
experience with process improvement, the type of resulting documentation
to be produced, and whether a rating (maturity level or capability level) is desired.
This chapter summarizes the steps involved and should not be perceived as replacing
SCAMPI A training or the SCAMPI A Method Definition Document.
