"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

This is our experience. However, we have heard that some
organizations are performing totally external SCAMPI A appraisals, meaning that
the entire Appraisal Team is external to the organization, that is, no members of the
appraised organization are on the Appraisal Team.
What is a SCAMPi A Appraisal?
A SCAMPI A is an intensive look at how an organization has implemented its processes
and process improvement activities based on a detailed review of a selected
subset of an organization??™s projects and related support groups. These selected
projects, which are called focus projects, must represent the type of projects that
the organization normally supports. These selected projects must demonstrate the
methods used to institutionalize the processes used throughout the organization,
as well as the process improvement approach used. The related support groups are
groups that are within the model scope for your appraisal, for example, the Training
Group for the Organizational Training process area or the Quality Assurance
Group for the Process and Product Quality Assurance process area.
