The
SCAMPI A is a very intensive, high-pressure activity that should not be undertaken
by sissies. It is a highly formal, structured set of activities that are defined by the
Software Engineering Institute and reviewed by them for adherence to the method.
There are no shortcuts to pass the appraisal and get your rating. The best way to
do well on a SCAMPI A is to try to implement as many of the CMMI practices
that make sense to your organization (which is most of the practices), to not rely
on alternative practices to satisfy the intent of the practices, and to not rely on
organizational constraints (lack of time, lack of personnel, lack of training, lack of
real management commitment) to influence the rating. Do not think you can write
some useless documentation and have it pass for meaningful processes. Do not rely
on thinking that you can just write a check to the Lead Appraiser and get your
rating. Really implementing CMMI into your organization takes time and money.
The results are worth it, but it is not easy.

PIIDs!??? All of the organizations that we have performed SCAMPI A??™s on have complained
endlessly about having to complete the PIIDs.
