"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

The PIIDs are divided into
direct and indirect evidence (called direct and indirect artifacts). Appraisal Teams
are required to seek evidence that each CMMI practice has been implemented. The
fundamental idea of the Practice Implementation Indicators is that the conduct
of an activity or the implementation of a practice results in ???footprints,??? that is,
322 n Interpreting the CMMI
evidence of the activity or practice. This evidence is required for both organizational-
level and project-level implementation. PIIDs are the mechanism used for
capturing objective evidence for direct and indirect artifacts. PIIDs are key to successful
SCAMPI appraisals. There is no ???required??? format or implementation for a
PIID. PIIDs can be implemented in Excel, Word, or a specialized database.
The SCAMPI Method involves:
Collecting process data to understand the current implemented process
(through PIIDs, interviews, and presentations)
Identifying process weaknesses and strengths
Determining the degree of satisfaction of the goals investigated
Assigning ratings (if requested by the appraisal sponsor)
SCAMPI is designed as a verification-based appraisal method.
