"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

So, the direct artifact is what is usually a direct output of the practice. The
indirect artifact is an indirect product of the practice, such as minutes of meetings
that review the direct output. Usually, but not always. One thing we have discovered
with PIIDs is that there really is no one hard and fast rule for defining direct
versus indirect artifacts. Direct artifacts, indirect artifacts, and affi rmations are
called PII (Practice Implementation Indicator) Types.
Table 22.1 contains descriptions and examples of direct and indirect artifacts
from the SCAMPI Method Definition Document.
Don??™t try to figure out the rationale for what is a direct or indirect artifact. The
PIIDs already tell you that. Also, sometimes, the direct and indirect artifacts are
interchangeable. Don??™t try to figure out the rationale. Just fill in the PIID.
Some organizations have also tried to use the PIIDs as their Process Asset
Library (PAL). Please do not do that. There should be more information in your
PAL than in the PIID, and this information should be organized in such a way that
makes it easy to find and easy to retrieve by the people in your organization that
need to use it.
