Those Damn PIIDs! n 333
So Why do Piids take So Much time?
The reason the PIIDs take so much time is that you need to collect a lot of data.
To give you an idea, up to now in Tables 22.2, 22.3, and 22.4 we have seen blank
PIIDs covering two specific practices and one generic practice covering 22 process
areas for a total of 24 practices. For Maturity Level 2, the number of practices
(specific and generic practices) for all 7 process areas comes out to 126 practices.
So, that is 126 practices times the number of focus projects being appraised and
that is just for Level 2. Table 22.5 shows the total number of practices for all the
maturity levels.
Since there is so much data to collect in the PIIDs, you need to be sure that
when your people fill them out they understand what is expected.
How Can i Screw up a Piid?
Apparently, it??™s easy. Because so many organizations have trouble with PIIDs, this
section contains some guidance on attributes of a good PIID, problems we have
encountered with them, and solutions to those problems.
