"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

Critical attributes of a good PIID include:
PIIDs clearly point to the artifacts
PIIDs do not have blank entries
PIIDs clearly address what the practice is asking for
PIIDs demonstrate a history of consistent usage over time
PIIDs list a specific document or artifact, not a repository or database
PIIDs list a page or section in a large document with a specific reference to
page number and section number
PIIDs are under Version and Configuration Control
PIIDs can be accessed via working hyperlinks in an electronic PIID
repository
We discuss each of these concepts in turn.
PIID Attribute: PIIDs clearly point to the artifacts.
Problem: If the reference is not clear, then the Appraisal Team cannot find
the artifacts, resulting in wasted time and an unsuccessful appraisal.
Solution: The entry needs to point to the actual, exact location of the artifact,
and an artifact repository needs to be maintained. (The artifact may be
paper or electronic.)
PIID Attribute: PIIDs do not have blank entries.

Problem: If a PIID contains blanks, the Appraisal Team cannot tell if a
blank entry is because the PIID is not finished or if the practice is not
implemented.
