"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

5 number of Practices By Maturity le el
Those Damn PIIDs! n 335
Problem: The Appraisal Team cannot take time to go through materials that
are not relevant and specific to the practice being investigated.
Solution: Understand the practices before you start completing the PIID
form. Use the CMMI model book. Provide what is asked for on the PIID
form.
PIID Attribute: PIIDs demonstrate a history of consistent usage over time.
Problem: Without historical data or multiple examples, the Appraisal Team
cannot tell if the practice has only been done once or is in common
usage.
Solution: Provide the last several occurrences (for example, the last three status
reports or last two yearly training plans) to show trends. Provide the
change log for a document.
PIID Attribute: PIIDs list a specific document or artifact, not a repository or
database.
Problem: If the PIID does not contain the actual document, but simply a
reference to where it may be found, the Appraisal Team will not know
what document is relevant, resulting in wasted time and an unsuccessful
appraisal.
