"Interpreting the CMMI: A Process Improvement Approach, Second Edition"

When the
comedians saw him, they made up a character based on his looks and performed
the associated skit. Was this coincidence? No. He matched their predetermined
criteria. They already had a checked shirt, dark pants, dark shoes, gray wig, gray
beard, big glasses, and a pillow to stuff into the shirt.
354 n Interpreting the CMMI
And what about the content of the comedy skits? Consider the venue for
these shows:
Tourists
Amsterdam
Drugs
Sex
Attitudes
So, whenever the comedians asked for situations and suggestions from the audience,
these were the suggestions they received. The comedians also rejected any that
they ???didn??™t like,??? that is, did not have skits for. The point is, although this show
was billed as ???improvisational,??? they already had a set structure (a set of standard
processes) in place. Without it, they would not be successful. True, there is room
for improvisation, just as there is room for interpretation and tailoring of organizational
processes in process improvement. But you have to have something to
begin with.
