"Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices, Part 1 (ICND1): CCNA Exam 640-802 and ICND1 Exam 640-822 (2nd Edition)"

Major commands have no effect unless a subcommand that supplies
the con?¬?guration entry is immediately entered. For example, the major command interface
serial 0 has no effect unless it is followed by a subcommand that tells what is to be done to
that interface.
The following are examples of some major commands and subcommands that go with
them:
Router(config)# iinntteerrffaaccee sseerriiaall 00 (major command)
Router(config-if)# sshhuuttddoowwnn (subcommand)
Router(config-if)# lliinnee ccoonnssoollee 00 (major command)
Router(config-line)# ppaasssswwoorrdd cciissccoo (subcommand)
Router(config-line)# rroouutteerr rriipp (major command)
Router(config-router)# nneettwwoorrkk 1100..00..00..00 (subcommand)
Notice that entering a major command switches from one con?¬?guration mode to another. It
is not necessary to return to the global con?¬?guration mode ?¬?rst before entering another
con?¬?guration mode.
After you enter the commands to con?¬?gure the router, you must save the running
con?¬?guration to NVRAM with the copy running-con?¬?g startup-con?¬?g command. If the
con?¬?guration is not saved to NVRAM and the router is reloaded, the con?¬?guration will be
lost and the router will revert to the last con?¬?guration saved in NVRAM.
