Configuring a Cisco Router 287
Configuring Cisco Router Interfaces
The main function of a router is to forward packets from one network device to another. To
do that, you must de?¬?ne the characteristics of the interfaces through which the packets are
received and sent.
The router interface characteristics include, but are not limited to, the IP address of the
interface, the data-link encapsulation method, media type, bandwidth, and clock rate.
You can enable many features on a per-interface basis. Interface con?¬?guration-mode
commands modify the operation of Ethernet, serial, and many other interface types. When
you enter the interface command, you must de?¬?ne the interface type and number.
