"Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices, Part 1 (ICND1): CCNA Exam 640-802 and ICND1 Exam 640-822 (2nd Edition)"

In networking,
a router is the device used to route traf?¬?c. Routers can forward packets over static
routes or dynamic routes based on the router con?¬?guration.
?–  Static routers use a route that a network administrator enters into the router manually.
Dynamic routes use a router that a network routing protocol adjusts automatically for
topology or traf?¬?c changes.
?–  Unidirectional static routes must be con?¬?gured to and from a stub network to allow
communications to occur.
?–  The ip route command can be used to con?¬?gure default route forwarding.
?–  The show ip route command veri?¬?es that static routing is properly con?¬?gured. Static
routes are signi?¬?ed in the command output by ???S.???
Configuring Serial Encapsulation
You can use serial point-to-point connections to connect your LAN to your service provider
WAN. You are likely to have serial point-to-point connections within your network,
between your network and a service provider, or both. You need to know how to con?¬?gure
the serial ports for such connections.
Circuit-switched WANs used to be the most common method of connecting remote sites.
Because of the bandwidth requirements of modern applications, circuit-switching
technology has been relegated to backup solutions and very small home of?¬?ces.
