Commands are parsed, that is, translated and executed, by the Cisco IOS Software when
you boot the system from the startup con?¬?guration ?¬?le or when you enter commands at the
command-line interface (CLI) in con?¬?guration mode.
Con?¬?guration ?¬?les are stored in the following locations:
?– The running con?¬?guration is stored in RAM.
?– The startup con?¬?guration is stored in NVRAM.
You can copy con?¬?guration ?¬?les from the router to a ?¬?le server using FTP, RCP, or TFTP.
For example, you can copy con?¬?guration ?¬?les to back up a current con?¬?guration ?¬?le to a
server before changing its contents, thereby allowing the original con?¬?guration ?¬?le to
be restored from the server. The protocol used depends on which type of server is used.
Figure 6-12 shows the various locations in which a con?¬?guration ?¬?le can be stored.
