Ultimately, this sharing is aimed at enabling participants in the EPCglobal
Network to gain a shared view of the disposition of EPC-bearing objects within a

requirements of a basic set of use cases.

The EPCIS speci?¬?cation is organized into several layers:
. Abstract Data Model Layer speci?¬?es the generic structure of EPCIS data, specifying
the general requirements for creating data de?¬?nitions within the Data
De?¬?nition Layer.
. Data De?¬?nition Layer speci?¬?es what data is exchanged through EPCIS, what its
abstract structure is, and what it means.
. Service Layer de?¬?nes service interfaces through which EPCIS clients interact. In
the present speci?¬?cation, two service layer modules are de?¬?ned, Capture and
Query. The Core Capture Operations Module de?¬?nes a service interface (the
EPCIS Capture Interface) through which EPCIS Capturing Applications use to
deliver Core Event Types to interested parties. The Core Query Operations Module
de?¬?nes two service interfaces (the EPCIS Query Control Interface and the
EPCIS Query Callback Interface) that EPCIS Accessing Applications use to obtain
data previously captured.
. Bindings specify concrete realizations of the Data De?¬?nition Layer and the Service
Layer. A total of nine bindings are speci?¬?ed for the three modules de?¬?ned in the
Data De?¬?nition and Service Layers.
