Generically, EPCIS deals in two kinds of data: event data and master data. Event data
arises in the course of carrying out business processes, and is captured through the
EPCIS Capture Interface and made available for query through the EPCIS Query Interfaces.
Master data is additional data that provides the necessary context for interpreting
the event data. It is available for query through the EPCIS Query Control Interface,
but the means by which master data enters the system is not speci?¬?ed in the EPCIS
1.0 speci?¬?cation.
Vocabularies are used extensively within EPCIS to model conceptual and physical
entities that exist in the real world. There are two kinds of vocabularies: Standard Vocabulary
(a vocabulary whose elements, de?¬?nition, and meaning are agreed to in advance by
trading partners) and a User Vocabulary (a vocabulary whose elements, de?¬?nition, and
meaning are under the control of a single organization).
The speci?¬?cation de?¬?nes a number of commands, along with their parameters (data
?¬?elds), to de?¬?ne EPCIS events and then a query command to extract events from an EPCIS
Events Repository.
2.11 Security Certi?¬?cate Pro?¬?le
The Security Certi?¬?cate Pro?¬?le (EPCglobal, 2006e) documents a security certi?¬?cate that can
be used in the authentication of entities (subscribers, services, physical devices) operating
within the EPCglobal Network.
