The service-oriented life cycle centers on the
development and operations perspective of a service and on its passage through time during its
life span. Here, the chiefly concern is the treatment of a service during life cycle events. This
pertains to mechanisms that have been commissioned to employ flawless execution of the service
and to ensure business continuity in the production environment. Exhibit 2.2 illustrates the four
major service-oriented life cycle transformation states. In its inception, a service appears merely
as idea and concept. Later on, it becomes a unit of analysis. When the analysis phase is completed,
a service evolves into a design entity. Finally, the service-oriented development life cycle yields
a physical solution service that is ready to be deployed in production environments.
STRATEGY. Service life cycle strategy is the driving force of any service-oriented project activity.
Those who plan to embark on such an initiative must have a life cycle strategy at hand. What is
a life cycle strategy? What should it consist of ? How can a strategy yield a direction and a road
map for service-oriented projects?
Generally, a life cycle strategy is the long-term plan for the service life cycle. This is
the vehicle for scheduling events, planning stages, and creating timetables for service-oriented
initiatives. This plan identifies the times at which the services are discovered, are constructed,
survive in production, and even retire.
