Services, however, should not be the only entities
affected during life cycle initiatives. Organizations typically incorporate consumer development
activities during the service life cycle timeline, because these processes intertwine frequently
during the life cycle road map.
Why are life cycle timelines so important to service-oriented projects and operations? Is it
possible to govern, budget, evaluate, and operate services without a clear timeframe? The answer
is obviously ???No.??? Building a life cycle road map entails the participation of many organizational
skill sets and planning strategies and requires setting project milestones and goals. These activities
must take place, interface, and coexist within a predefined service life cycle timeline.
How are service life cycle timelines determined? Who is responsible for estimating the life
span of service life cycles? When should services be promoted, demoted, or retired? The answers
to these questions can be obtained from one or more influential SOA bodies in the enterprise.
The road map planning tasks can be effortless and brisk if the organization has already embraced
an SOA Center of Excellence (CoE) practice, an SOA governance group, or SOA portfolio
management authorities. The experience that they have gained during multiple service-oriented
projects and service operations can then be put to use. Organizations that have not reached high
