"Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture"

11 SERVICE-ORIENTED LIFE CYCLE DESIGN-TIME DISCIPLINES
illustrates these three service-oriented disciplines: design-time, run-time, and continuous. Each
life cycle discipline is explained in the sections that follow.
SERVICE LIFE CYCLE DESIGN-TIME DISCIPLINES. Service-oriented life cycle design-time disciplines
are all about building services and preparing them for production. They consist of
recommended activities that should be pursued at a project??™s inception through physical construction
of services. This process starts with service life cycle planning in which a life cycle strategy
is carved; continues with service discovery and analysis, design, architecture; and concludes
with the physical construction of services. Exhibit 2.11 depicts eight design-time disciplines:
service-oriented life cycle strategy, service-oriented conceptualization, service-oriented discovery
and analysis, service-oriented business integration, service-oriented design, conceptual architecture,
logical architecture, and service construction. Note that the six round-cornered squares are the
service-oriented modeling disciplines that were introduced in Chapter 1 and are further discussed
in Chapters 4 through 16.
Service-Oriented Life Cycle Strategy Discipline. The service life cycle strategy discipline offers
guidance that facilitates the establishment of a life cycle road map that outlines detailed implementations
for the service-oriented design-time and run-time life cycle seasons.
