Service-Oriented Construction Discipline. The service construction discipline contributes a
number of best practices and activities that can be employed by service-oriented development
teams to enhance source code quality and durability. The well-known contract-driven approach
to building services introduces the top-down and the bottom-up service development methodologies
that facilitate alignment efforts between services and their consumers. The top-down
approach advocates that a contract must first exist before a service is constructed. Conversely,
the bottom-up approach starts when a service already exists and the contract that specifies its
offerings is then established. This book does not cover the construction discipline since it falls
within the non-modeling discipline category.
SERVICE LIFE CYCLE RUN-TIME DISCIPLINES. Service life cycle run-time disciplines encompass
the production environment management and monitoring activities. Once services are released to
production, they face constant survival challenges and must be able to adapt to their surroundings
??”networks, middleware, peer services, and consumers. Moreover, because a service ought to
spend most of its life span in the run-time season, special attention should be given to addressing
unpredictable, random, and conditional events to maintain business continuity, tolerate business
volatility, and carry out service commitments to consumers.
