Likewise, service portfolio
management should be an integral part of every life cycle process.
By employing this parallelism paradigm, in which service life cycle activities can be
monitored and governed by organizations such as enterprise architecture groups and SOA CoE
practitioners, it is possible to reduce redundancy in service life cycle efforts, encourage asset
reuse across the organization, promote the elimination of silo operations, and contribute to the
alignment of various business and development groups throughout the enterprise. Exhibit 2.13
illustrates the four major continuous disciplines recommended for life cycle implementations:
service governance, service portfolio management, continuous integration, and service testing
and certification. These best practices to service-oriented life cycle continuous management are
regarded as non-modeling disciplines and yet immensely affect the course of a service progression
during its lifespan.
The following sections describe essential service life cycle continuous disciplines and
illustrate their contributions to the overall service life cycle process.

service-oriented projects. Without effective governance disciplines, services will not be efficiently
