These
services may include opening business accounts, distributing statements, and processing loans
for small businesses. Can the account balance service that is currently serving private banking
clients expand beyond its initial scope to accommodate the new business mission and business
requirements? Service workflows can help us understand the influences on service behavior and
efficiently plan various scenarios to address such changes in business direction. They offer a
view into service development and operation strategies that enable services to coexist in rapidly
changing technological and business environments. Exhibit 3.1 illustrates a service life cycle
workflow that commences at the inception of the design-time season and spans the run-time
season.
Unfortunately, service workflows cannot go back in time or converge with their starting
points. They always move forward to meet the next life cycle event. Why is there a need to
visualize workflows if they always travel along the service timeline in a straight line? Although
workflows identify a service??™s position at any given instant during its life cycle, this journey in
time should be planned and funded appropriately for the following reasons:
??? Workflows illustrate service development approaches and scenarios during the design-time
season.
??? Workflows depict the impact of life cycle events on services and on their operations,
mainly during the run-time season.
