Service-Oriented Life Cycle Workflows: Introduction 51
The following sections discuss the benefits of workflows for the design-time and run-time
seasons:
SERVICE WORKFLOWS IN THE DESIGN-TIME SEASON. How can service life cycle workflows
describe the dynamics of an organization??™s development environments? How can workflows depict
the service analysis, design, architecture, and construction processes? Can workflows illustrate
what decisions were made during the service-oriented business integration process? These are
major questions to be addressed before embarking on service development initiatives.
A service life cycle workflow can represent a design strategy and an architectural approach
that are typically devised during the design-time season. More specifically, a workflow can depict
the discontinuation of service development efforts. From a design perspective, it can also describe
the breakdown of an oversized service. Conversely, it can illustrate an aggregation operation that
is being performed on small size services amid the discovery and analysis process. Therefore,
during the design-time season, these service life cycle transformations can provide valuable information
about internal structures, deployment, and management requirements for the upcoming
run-time season.
For example, the proposed service discovery, analysis, design, and architecture modeling
disciplines depicted in Chapters 4 through 16 often introduce services as aggregated entities
made up of other smaller services and software components.
