How can decision analysis (DA) best practices facilitate the derivation and categorization
of conceptual services? The decision analysis concept was coined in 1964 by Ronald A. Howard,5
a professor at Stanford University who envisioned formal decision-making methods that today
can be used practically in both scientific and business disciplines. Since its inception, DA theory
has evolved into practical methodologies that offer valuable decision-making standards and
implementation tools. One of the most effective is the decision tree,6 used to assist with logical
inference of abstractions and often for categorization and quantification activities.
90 Ch. 5 Conceptual Service Identification
In the data mining science, decision trees are employed as predictive models7 to facilitate
the identification of future behaviors and process outcomes. This paradigm is also valuable
to the service metamorphosis promise, in which proactive service life cycle strategies tackle
unpredictable events and guide the development of business and technology scenarios. Thus, the
decision-tree mechanism should play a major role in discovering the right conceptual services for
the organization and encourage proactive initiatives to reduce the impact on business execution.
(Chapters 2 and 3 elaborate on service life cycle strategy crafting and the predictability aspects
of services.)
