This means conceptual services should be further categorized and generalized to facilitate
the creation of an organizational glossary and a firm-wide service-oriented common dictionary,
namely abstractions taxonomy. What should be the ultimate outcome of this process? The main
goal would be to formalize enterprise service taxonomies that should be developed and maintained
throughout service-oriented projects. Besides filling the organization??™s communication gaps and
bridging language barriers, service taxonomies can also provide clear business direction, cultivate
effective enterprise strategies, and facilitate alignment between business and IT organizations.
Services taxonomies are simply higher levels of abstractions. The method by which service
categories can be formalized is to identify the business commonalities of conceptual services
and group them into higher levels of abstractions. As many taxonomy variations as required
can be created; they should be aligned with the business interests and even included in the
chosen business strategies. Exhibit 5.7 depicts a service taxonomy layer made up of two major
category findings: high-return investment basket (derived from conceptual services type A) and
conservative investment basket (marked as type B). These developments introduce two major
new enterprise investment concepts that can galvanize future product investment opportunities
and foster new enterprise strategies.
