EXHIBIT 5.9 HIERARCHY ASSOCIATIONS EXAMPLE
At this stage, when services are merely conceptualized, identified, and established, it may
be imperative to carve out a service granularity strategy that can guide the way the enterprise
reuses its valuable assets. Thus, the conceptual services association hierarchy technique can be
used to enable four major conceptual service imperatives: granularity assessment, reusability
assessment, consumption expectations, and service grouping.
Granularity Assessment. Assessing service granularity can be accomplished by using the association
hierarchy approach. Entities that are the most coarse should always be positioned near the
top of the concept hierarchy, whereas lower levels should be dedicated to the most granular conceptual
services. Coarse-grained concepts typically cover a larger scope of the business problem
domain. Conversely, fine-grained services provide narrower solutions.
