Thus, analysis efforts should
yield practical recommendations that not only offer valuable design and architecture
guidance but are affordable.

CHAPTER 6
SERVICE-ORIENTED TYPING AND PROFILING
MODEL
Classifying service-oriented assets based on their origin, structural characteristics, architectural
contribution, functionality, and behaviors is the practice of typing and profiling. This is a software
asset categorization process that should be implemented throughout service life cycles and
principally employed for service discovery and analysis evaluation. Without a clear identity of
the services it will not be possible to appraise their capacity to provide an efficient solution
for enterprise concerns. Thus, this typing method should be used to help label, recognize, and
categorize organizational software entities by their unique features and context.
In the long run, service typing and profiling activities will enable ascertaining enterprise
reusability opportunities, reducing business process redundancy across lines of business, and
efficiently planning asset consolidations across production environments. The propose service
typing and profiling process would also enable organizations to institute a viable asset repository,
known as service-oriented asset portfolio, for cataloging and inventory management purposes.
