and the operation communities during a service-oriented life cycle. Why is service typing an
essential activity? These service portrayals are akin to glossaries by which business and technology
personnel, such as analysis, modeling, architecture, management, and development staff,
identify fundamental service characteristics, functionality, and behaviors. In fact, the typing process
is merely an assessment of a service??™s contribution to a project or to a business initiative,
and not the ultimate determination of final product design or architecture. Thus, service types
refine their conceptual and physical identities, which can be further leveraged during service
life cycles.
What are the characteristics used to classify services? There are three major category
groups that can facilitate the identification process of an analysis service: service source, service
structure, and service context.
