"Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture"

Remember, the defined charter of the service discovery and analysis process
is not simply to identify solutions and inspect entities??™ potential to tackle the problem domain.
Here, it is required to expand on these propositions and clearly define the internal compositions
of the services.
Atomic Structure Type. An atomic structure is the most rudimentary service internal formation.
This type is a service that is an inseparable software unit typically providing limited business or
technical functionality. Atomic services are characteristically employed to resolve tactical issues,
rather than to furnish strategic solutions across lines of business or silo organizations. Thus,
labeling services as atomic entities means that they typically have lower reusability rates and are
restricted in the scope of their functionality. A service that is limited in business or technological
capacity is called a single-dimension offering, because it focuses on narrower enterprise solution
ranges and is not designed to cover a wide range of organizational business requirements or
concerns.
The decision to avoid the decomposition of a service and keep it intact is chiefly based
on its lower granularity level. Such services are typically regarded as fine-grained assets. (This
topic is further discussed in Chapter 7.)
Composite Structure Type. Composite services are not atomic. They encompass internal services
that coexist, form simple or complex associations, and collaboratively contribute to the business
and technology goals that have been set.
