"Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture"

Other Structures: Multidimensional Formations. Bear in mind that atomic services are typically
designed to provide limited and narrow scope functionalities. Therefore, they are regarded
as fine-grained entities. Conversely, composite services or service clusters are made up of internal
services that collectively offer larger-scope operations. But what about those services that do not
fall into these categories? Do such formations exist? Can a service structure be envisioned that
is not atomic, not a composite or cluster formation, provides a wide range of activities, returns a
variety of data and information, and is considered coarse-grained?
To answer these questions, consider services that are based on multidimensional formations.
1 These internal structures can return enormous amounts of requested information, accommodate
a large number of business activities, and are typically vital to organizational analytical
disciplines and enterprise reporting. For instance, data warehousing services that employ underlying
data cube models exemplify this multidimensional service notion.2 Exhibit 6.5 shows an
example of a multidimensional analysis service structure. It presents a trading service that provides
multiple views of diamond product types, sales by continent, and years of transactions.
TYPING SERVICES CONTEXT. The services??™ contributions can be extended to a number of organizations
and offer diversified business and technology values in different areas of expertise.
