"Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture"

3 SERVICE DISCOVERY AND ANALYSIS TOOLBOX
??? Subtraction analysis. Subtraction activities assist with the downsizing of service functionalities
that no longer contribute to the solution. This practice also provides mechanisms
to eliminate irrelevant or redundant service processes and to achieve performance optimization.
GRANULARITY ANALYSIS
Service-oriented organizational assets, such as applications, services, and components, have boundaries
and limits that can be measured and evaluated for their capacity to contribute to an organization??™s
business and technology strategy. This analysis is not only about identifying physical
size but is also about inspecting the scope of functionality and the range of solutions that can be
offered. Therefore, the discovery of a service??™s granularity can help in understanding its value to the
organization. Measuring these qualities is a matter of inspecting business or technology processes
and studying their magnitude.
COARSE-GRAINED SERVICE STRUCTURES. Coarse-grained services encapsulate a broad scope
of business or technology functionality. These characteristically are composite and cluster formations
designed to tackle a wider range of an organization??™s process. High-level abstractions
can also be regarded as coarse-grained entities if they encompass a large portion of the solution
domain. For example, a trading portfolio service that encompasses a variety of account management
tools, such as account statements service, account balances service, quotes service, positions
service, and margins service, can be conceived as a coarse-grained enterprise entity because of
its vast business functionality.
