This view chiefly communicates enterprise ideas and
issues associated with the question ???Why do we operate this way???? Imagine how many systems,
services, and driving architectures an organization supports that implicitly do not generate revenue.
They are created because of a company??™s internal cultural requirements, such as communication
enhancements between business and technology groups or because of the need to define clear
boundaries between lines of business.
What, then, are the various organizational events and initiatives that drive the establishment
of corresponding technical architectures? There are many enterprise activities that are categorized
as low return-on-investment assets. In many respects, they are not as vital to an organization
as revenue-generating implementations. For example, financial divisions in large organizations
typically employ infrastructure architectures and construct firewalls to protect their lines of business.
These organizations also use middleware products to define their business boundaries. Other
institutions may embark on construction of community intranets or internal portals to increase
