"Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture"

2. Thus, a layered domain formation is a
hierarchical and a structural view in which domain levels interact to provide viable business
solutions.
The interaction aspect of the domain-layered formations is expressed by the individual
contributions of the various levels in the hierarchy. Recall Allen Newell??™s argument (discussed in
Chapter 9, in the Core Products Perspective section) about the necessity of all levels to interact
to produce a more generalized and global behavior of an entire layered structure. Obviously, the
confined business domains both depend on their immediate levels below and communicate with
their adjacent layers above. Therefore, the layered domain structure provides another opportunity
to study the organization??™s business components and their contributions to the overall revenue
strategy and the business model.

EXHIBIT 10.2 LAYERED BUSINESS DOMAINS
Integration with Business Hierarchies. The opportunity to learn about the business by looking
at its operations from a different viewpoint is not the only benefit of the domain layered approach.
The service-oriented business integration effort profoundly relies on these layer formations. But
where is the starting point? At which hierarchical level should services be integrated with? These
are fundamental concerns that should be addressed before the business integration initiative gets
under way.
