"Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture"

???Local integration??? means that the integration
with a business domain physically occurs in one place. Local integration operations are inherently
business activities conducted by smaller organizations, in which business execution and management
is centralized. Moreover, their driving technical architectures and technologies commit to
a more narrowly defined geographic boundary that is typically easier to implement. Exhibit 10.8
illustrates such a single local integration environment.
REGIONAL INTEGRATION ENVIRONMENT. A regional integration environment is akin to a district
that includes multiple integration locations. This provincial integration style must incorporate
multiple domains that are located in close proximity. Typically, regional business activities take
place in one continent. A single continent, however, may include multiple regions.
What are the business integration challenges that may arise in regional integration environments?
Given that regions characteristically aggregate multiple domains, the major difficulty
may stem from the distribution aspects of the services. Thus, dispersing services to a region
may require meticulous business planning, and later on, technological coordination. This integration
scheme typically requires an organizational strategic view that addresses the distribution of
service-oriented assets across multiple locations in a region. Issues such as service coordination,
synchronization, orchestration, and consistency2 are the major considerations of this technical
architectural style.
