"Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture"

The federated tier structure introduces service-oriented communication, software distribution,
and business continuity challenges.5 Should services intertwine with the global federated
scheme, or should they integrate with local domains, disregarding the big picture scenario? Should
an organization carve out a federated business integration strategy ahead of service-oriented
integration activities? Obviously, one of the major challenges would be to identify business
dependencies between various federation constituents and to propose a holistic service integration
solution that can address a federated tier distributed structure. Disregarding a federated
structure and integrating services only with the local business domains may not be in line with
organizational strategies.
Federated business integration environments can embrace a variety of distribution formats.
Some may be located in close proximity to the controlling authority, and others may be spread
out to other continents. Exhibit 10.12 illustrates a three-zone federated integration environment
(A, B, and C), each of which maintains relationships with its constituents. The main authority
resides in location A.
DISTRIBUTED AUTONOMOUS BUSINESS TIER STRUCTURE. An autonomous integration structure
is an environment in which business activities are delivered by geographically isolated
business tiers that are not structured to preserve continuity or maintain tight collaboration with
peer tiers.
