technological links between services that participate in a solution; these are known as conceptual
affiliations. Second, later in the service design phase, logical relationships were discovered
between services that are driven by message distribution and exchange requirements.
MESSAGE EXCHANGE ROUTES. Obviously, service relationships affect message delivery design
decisions. These associations identify the requirements for establishing the best message routes to
enable efficient transactions. A message route pertains to the network paths that allow information
to be exchanged between consumers and services. Therefore, a design composition is influenced by
service relationships and shaped by the message exchange routes and service behavior3 that were
devised earlier in the service-oriented logical design relationship phase, discussed in Chapter 12.
PATTERN FORMATIONS DRIVEN BY STYLES. A service-oriented design composition is also
about constructing formations by positioning services in certain shapes, named styles, to provide
solutions. These arrangements form visual patterns that help enable efficient message routing
and transaction execution. The service formations that were discovered are also regarded as the
packaged solutions that communicate the strategies being employed to resolve organizational
concerns.
SERVICE-ORIENTED DESIGN COMPOSITION COMPONENTS
What are the building blocks of a design composition? And what are the supporting elements that
???glue??? these components together? How can a solution be communicated by introducing a design
composition to the organization? These three questions are the essence of the service-oriented
structure composition effort: (1) know what the pillars of the design compositions are; (2) understand
the matter that glues the service structures together; and (3) master the method used to
solve problems with the chosen design compositions.
