"Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture"

11 STAR DESIGN COMPOSITION STYLE, SUPPORTED BY STAR BEAMS
Service-Oriented Design Composition Styles 269
Asset Decoupling Opportunities. Constructing a star formation is essentially beginning with a
large coarse-grained atomic or composite service. This entity is the starting point that always
occupies the center of the star formation. The decoupling process pursued next yields smaller
services that should form star arms, each of which links services that share common attributes.
For example, recall the two arms in Exhibit 13.11. The first supports customer account services,
and the second offers customer financial assistance. Thus, the star design style offers a method to
logically break services down into smaller assets and to further arrange them into context-related
and linked entities. But remember, this arrangement is not hierarchical, because the linked services
do not necessarily maintain a parent/offspring relationship.
Relevancy and Priority. The star design composition style enables arrangement of services
based on their business relevancy and priority. Services that are closer to the center of the
star should be regarded as more vital to the business and considered strategic implementations.
Conversely, tactical services should be located farther from the star focal point. Thus, the star
arms can assist in positioning services according to their business contribution and their projected
revenue generation.
